Structuring your Podcast during the COVID-19 Pandemic
We find ourselves in a very unique and unsettling time with COVID-19 essentially impacting all parts of our lives. With many of us finding ourselves confided to our homes while we work ... and play, the patterns of our media consumption have drastically changed with many podcast shows experiencing drastic changes in listenership. We thought we would share some tips related to strategies and topics that can help you maintain and appeal to a wider audience.
COVID-19 Information: this one may be a little obvious, however recent stats have shown approximately 1.3 Million listens of over 96 episodes related to the current pandemic as of March 18... so if you have information that can help your audience better prepare for the weeks ahead then create an episode now! You do not have to be a medical professional to provide useful content ... try providing financial advice, meal preparation tips, interviews with people who have been affected etc. The key is to provide helpful accurate information at a time where people are searching for sources to provide some level of relief.
Consider story-telling / series: it may be difficult to completely change the topic / theme of your podcast, however keep in mind that people are stuck at home and attempting to find ways to relax and unwind from the daily uncertainty and stress they are experiencing over COVID-19. Starting a episodic story-telling podcast or focusing on up-beat content may drive more listeners ...everyone is looking fro a distraction from the stress this pandemic has brought their way.
How-to Podcasts: With all the idle people out there looking for ways to kill time, creating how-to podcasts may be something to explore. This doesn't mean that you have to learn a new skill or come up with something ground-breaking, you can leverage the skills you use in your daily job and talk about those. Are you an accountant but don't have an office to go to? Setup a podcast around tax preparation for all those people who find themselves at home with time to do their taxes.
Content for Kids: Many parents are trying to find activities for their kids and are losing their minds finding ways to keep them entertained. Do you have an idea for a show or series that would engage kids? If your answer is yes ... you could be sitting on a podcast goldmine. Some ideas include a music dance mix appropriate for children or a series of stories that result in repeat listeners.
Again, this time is requiring all content creators to get a little more creative with how they engage their audience, the key is to pay attention to how the lives have changed for your target market and how you can adjust your podcast content to appeal to your existing market and possibly expand your base.
